Over 50,000 Refugees Flee to Burundi Amid Escalating Congo Conflict
Since February 2025, more than 50,000 refugees have crossed into Burundi, fleeing intensified violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. This surge comes on top of the roughly 91,000 refugees and asylum seekers already residing in the country — the vast majority from the DRC.
In response to the growing humanitarian needs, ASOV dispatched a team of four staff members and a driver
to Musenyi, in Rutana Province, to assess conditions on the ground and lay the foundation for an emergency response plan.
The mission focused on identifying urgent needs among refugee women and their families. ASOV collected data to guide future empowerment initiatives and delivered initial support to women and girls. The visit also aimed to strengthen partnerships with other stakeholders committed to supporting Congolese refugees.
